Polynesian Pacific Paradise

She ran away in her sleep and dreamed of Paradise

Do you dream of escaping to Paradise, a land where the sound of the sea lapping at your feet sends you off into a whimsical sleep, the sun rays on your face warm your skin as a light tropical sea breeze tickles your skin? Escape the daily grind and jet off to one of my Top 5 Travel Destinations – Rarotonga!

Rarotongan Adventures

Rarotonga is a Polynesian Island a part of the Pacific Islands in the Southern Hemisphere. It is a mere 32km in circumference and has no high rise buildings meaning for easy access to all of the Island and wonderful views no matter where you are.  Being sub tropical the average temperature is 27 degrees, now that is my kind of Paradise! To greet you upon arrival are the sweet sounds of 70 year old Jake Numanga who serenades you with polynesian tunes on his ukelele atop the luggage carousel whilst you are adorned in beautiful smelling fresh flower lei’s.

The Cook Islands are only a hop, skip and a jump away from Australia and New Zealand but sit on a time zone where you actually travel back in time, I think I have found a temporary way of getting younger! There are an abundance of accommodation choices to suit all budget levels from hostels with hammocks over looking the beach to 5* resorts.  Many travellers do come here solo unlike what the guide books say and not all travellers are on 5*holidays. We chose Rarotonga over Fiji the main competition based on testimonials from friends, and it did NOT disappoint.

RarotongaWe stayed in the much sought after area of Muri Lagoon at Muri Retreat  (NZ$115 pn for two people), a set of four apartments atop a hillside 5 minutes stroll from the lagoon. Phoebe and Steve greet you with coconuts, bananas and paw paw for breakfast whilst giving you the lo down on island life.  Muri Lagoon sits opposite 3 Motu’s, small uninhabited islands that create a wonderful crystal blue lagoon which is home to a vast variety of tropical fish.

We opted to forgo the lagoon cruise and hire our own Treddlecat  (a catamaran pedalo) giving you the freedom to pedal from motu to motu at your own leisure.  Days were spent lounging on the white sandy beaches soaking up the rays from the tropical sun and drinking cocktails at sunset. We couldn’t have asked for a more idyllic and authentic location, an island not consumed by commercialism but still offers everything you need for a island vacation.

Rarotonga is full of culture, island history and beautiful vistas. Even the money is beautiful and quirky-anyone seen triangle coins before?! If you are looking for your next tropical getaway then put Rarotonga on the top of your list-you won’t regret it.

Top Tips for your Rarotongan getaway:

  • Hire a moped and a make your way around the island like a local.
